In addition to large cities and capitals to which tourists travel en masse, there are many small gems in Europe – towns that delight. It is located on the other side of the country from the capital, in the Šariš region, and is an ideal option for a weekend getaway. Is it worth visiting Prešov and its surroundings? The city will delight fans of history and culture, as well as lovers of mountains, nature and beautiful views. We will list just a few examples of the most important attractions in the area, but first let’s look for accommodation, because it is certainly worth staying here more than one night.

Overnight in Prešov

The best choice will be accommodation in the city center – close to many attractions. The restored tenement houses boutique hotels that will add charm and atmosphere to walks around the city. Although they are a bit more expensive, we found a place that was within a reasonable budget.

Presov – what to see?

  1. Hlavna – this is the real heart of Prešov. A promenade where you will find not only restaurants and bars, but also the most important monuments of the city. There is the Co-Cathedral of St. Nicholas and the Rákóczi Palace. In our opinion, this is a place where you should start your walk around the city to feel its atmosphere. It is also worth climbing the tower of the Co-Cathedral to see them from above.
  2. Malkovska horka – to see the panorama of the entire city at sunset, we recommend going to Malkovska hill, which is located close to the city. You can easily get there on foot, and it should take you less than an hour from the center. There are several trails through green areas, so the walk will be a pleasure, and the views will reward the physical effort.
  3. Solivar – Prešov was called the “city of salt” because the traditions of mining this raw material here date back to the 17th century. During your visit to Solivar, you will visit former salt mines and see various facilities and devices that were an engineering genius at that time. At the Solivar Museum you will learn how important salt was to the economy of that time.
  4. Šariš Castle – it is worth driving to the town of Velikiy Šariš to start the hike to the castle hill. One of the largest castles in Slovakia, which dates back to the 13th century. From the ruins of the castle there are beautiful views of the surrounding area, and when the visibility is good, you can also see the mountains of Hungary, Ukraine and Poland.
  5. Opal mines – are about 25 km away from Prešov, but if you have never heard of this mineral, you must visit them. Today, opal is no longer mined here, and the underground corridors have been designated as a tourist route for everyone (there is also a longer route for adventure seekers).

Prešov – where to eat?

  1. Poetika bistro – its name also includes coffee and wine, and in fact, both the coffee and the wine selection here are delicious. The place is small and cozy, and the menu has some delicious ideas.
  2. Dobre Casy – a great selection of good beers, both Slovak and Czech. An atmospheric pub and that’s what they should focus on. We do not recommend the food, a large selection of dishes does not necessarily correspond to their quality. A great place to reminisce about the old Good Times (that means Dobre Casy) over a pint.
  3. Šarišská Chiža – a free ticket for anyone who can eat their portions. Delicious local cuisine located in the basement of one of Prešov’s tenement houses. We especially recommend the garlic soup and fried cheese.
