Etiquette on the bus

How to behave on a bus? Travel culture matters!

When planning a coach journey – regardless of whether we are going to a neighboring city or to the other end of Europe – we usually pay attention to the comfort of the vehicle, the number of stops and the price of the ticket. Carriers make every effort to ensure comfort: modern seats, air conditioning, Wi-Fi and USB sockets are already standard. However, even the most comfortable coach will not ensure a pleasant journey if passengers forget about the basic rules of culture.

That is why today we would like to remind you of a few simple rules of etiquette when travelling by coach – for the convenience and comfort of all of us.

1. Start with a good entry

Personal culture begins even before we get on the bus:

  • People getting off always have priority – do not force your way in.
  • Let’s help the elderly, the disabled or parents with children.
  • Don’t push your way – in most cases, seats are numbered.
  • Do not block the seat with luggage – bags and backpacks should be placed under the seat or on the shelf.

2. Travel with empathy

A bus is a means of public transport – this means that we will share space with other people, often with different needs, nationalities and expectations.

  • Respect the space of others – do not rest your legs on the chair in front of you, do not recline the backrest without warning the person behind you.
  • Be patient – kids can be squirmy and older people may need more time to transfer. Sometimes it’s just best to let it go.

3. Food? In moderation

  • Save large meals for breaks – intense smells may disturb others.
  • Avoid getting it dirty – spilled food or greasy packaging spoil the aesthetics and comfort of driving.
  • Pick up your rubbish – if you don’t have access to a bin, take it with you and throw it away at your next stop.

4. No alcohol or cigarettes

It’s not just a matter of good manners – it’s a principle of every carrier’s regulations.

  • Do not drink alcohol in a vehicle – even “for relaxation.”
  • Do not smoke cigarettes – this also applies to e-cigarettes and tobacco heaters.

5. Be discreet

Travel is not the place for loud conversations and noise:

  • Speak in whispers, do not engage in long telephone discussions.
  • Use headphones – never listen to music or movies through a speaker.
  • Turn off the sounds on your phone – ringtones and notifications can be irritating.
  • Don’t talk to the driver – it’s not only rude, it’s also dangerous.

6. Words have power

  • Good morning”, “I’m sorry”, “goodbye” – these simple words have a huge meaning.
  • Ask if the seat is available before sitting down.
  • Don’t take up two seats – if there’s an empty seat next to you, don’t treat it as private storage.

7. Respect the privacy of others

  • Don’t look over your passenger’s shoulder – whether at a book, phone or newspaper.
  • If someone clearly wants to rest or is reading, do not force the conversation.

Shared journey = shared responsibility

Let’s remember – observing the rules of etiquette not only makes it easier to get along with other passengers, but also affects the general atmosphere during the journey. A coach is not a salon, but it is also not a battlefield. A bit of culture and empathy is enough to make the journey peaceful and pleasant – for everyone.
