My story about the city of bridges and thermal baths

I have always dreamed of a trip that would allow me to slow down, feel the city’s atmosphere without the summer hustle, and simply enjoy the moment. When October arrived and the world outside the window began to shine in shades of gold and red, I knew it was the perfect time. The choice fell on Budapest – a city I had heard becomes magical in autumn. And you know what? I was not disappointed. I want to take you on a journey through the Hungarian capital, tell you about the places that captured my heart, and show how easy it is to organize such a trip.

How to get there? Comfortable bus travel to Budapest

When planning the trip, I immediately thought of traveling by bus. I wanted to avoid the rush associated with airports and just enjoy the journey. It was a great decision! I chose a connection from Warsaw, but I know it is equally convenient from Kraków, Katowice, or Wrocław. Although the journey lasted several hours, it passed incredibly quickly. A comfortable reclining seat, Wi-Fi access, which allowed me to fine-tune my sightseeing plan on the go, and air conditioning made me arrive rested and ready to explore the city.

One of the biggest advantages of this trip is the view from the window. Traveling through the picturesque areas of Slovakia, with mountains on the horizon, was a wonderful prelude to the Hungarian adventure. It’s an experience you can’t get while flying. No baggage limits allowed me to pack an extra warm sweater and comfortable shoes – an absolute must-have for autumn walks. In hindsight, traveling by bus to Budapest is the perfect combination of savings and comfort. On bilety.pl, I found the perfect connection for myself and could conveniently book the ticket online.

Where to stay? Recommended accommodation in Budapest

Budapest offers accommodation for every budget, and finding the perfect place is not difficult at all. Here are three options I can wholeheartedly recommend:

  • Hotel in the city center (mid-range): I chose Hotel Memories Budapest in the lively 7th district. Its biggest advantage is the location – everything was nearby! After a day full of experiences, it was nice to return to a cozy room and rest a little before an evening walk.
  • Budget gem: For those looking for savings, a great choice is Maverick City Lodge. It’s more than a hostel – clean rooms, friendly atmosphere, and excellent location make it an ideal base for exploring the city.
  • Accommodation with character: If you dream of something unusual, look for an apartment in one of the historic buildings in the Castle District (Buda). It’s a chance to feel like a local and wake up with a view of charming cobbled streets.

What to see in Budapest? Attractions you will remember for a long time

The list of attractions in Budapest is really long, but there are a few places you simply must see, especially in autumn. Here’s my subjective list:

Hungarian Parliament

This monumental building is the city’s landmark. Seen from the opposite bank of the Danube, it makes a huge impression, but only up close can you appreciate its architectural craftsmanship. I especially recommend visiting it after dark when it is beautifully illuminated.

Tip: Tickets for the interior tour should be booked online in advance to avoid long queues. Tours with a guide are very popular!

Fisherman’s Bastion (Halászbástya) and Castle Hill

This place looks like it came straight out of a Disney fairy tale. White towers, arcades, and breathtaking views of Pest and the Danube make it possible to spend several hours here. The soft autumn sun gives this place a magical glow. A walk around the entire Castle Hill, where the Royal Castle (Budai Vár) is located, is a must.

Tip: Go there late in the afternoon. The golden hour is the perfect time for memorable photos.

Széchenyi Thermal Baths (Széchenyi Gyógyfürdő)

Is there anything better than immersing yourself in hot thermal water when it’s cold outside? Probably not! Budapest is famous for its springs, and Széchenyi Baths are the most famous complex. The outdoor pools, with rising steam, create an incredible, slightly mysterious atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to relax after a full day of sightseeing.

Tip: Bring a towel and slippers – this will save you from renting them on site.

Margaret Island (Margitsziget)

The green lungs of Budapest transform into a palette of warm colors in autumn. It’s the perfect place for a peaceful walk, jogging, or cycling away from the city bustle. The sound of leaves underfoot, the view of the Danube, and a moment of relaxation are priceless.

Tip: At the entrance to the island, you can rent bicycles or four-person pedal vehicles – a great option for families.

Evening Danube Cruise

Budapest is often called the “City of Bridges,” and seeing them all from the river is an unforgettable experience. When dusk falls and the most important buildings, including the Parliament and Royal Castle, light up with thousands of lights, the city shows its second, magical face. The cruise is a perfect way to wrap up the day.

Tip: Dress warmly – in autumn it can be windy on the water, even if the cruise is on a covered boat.

Where to eat? My culinary discoveries in Budapest

Hungarian cuisine is much more than goulash! Here are three places I particularly liked:

  • Traditional restaurant: Gettó Gulyás. Located in the Jewish Quarter, the restaurant serves classic Hungarian dishes with a modern twist. The atmosphere is cozy and relaxed, and prices are very reasonable. Their goulash is a true masterpiece!
  • Coffee shop with soul: My Little Melbourne Coffee. The perfect spot for a warming coffee and a piece of delicious cake, like the traditional Dobos cake. A small, atmospheric café where you can briefly hide from the autumn chill.
  • Quick bite: Great Market Hall (Nagy Vásárcsarnok). On the upper floor of this beautiful historic hall, there is a food court where you can try local specialties like langos. It’s busy and crowded, but the atmosphere is unique.

Time to hit the road!

Budapest in autumn is a perfect choice. The city is calmer, the colors are stunning, and the warmth of the thermal springs recharges your energy for the coming months. The view from Fisherman’s Bastion, relaxing in the baths, and tasting traditional dishes are memories that will stay with me for a long time.

My advice at the end? Don’t forget comfortable shoes! Budapest is best discovered on foot, wandering through its charming streets. First, I compared offers from different carriers and chose the ticket that was perfect for me – that’s how my adventure began. Yours can also start on bilety.pl.
